Understanding Your Horse: Equine Character and Psychology, Haley, Neale
2 Haley, Neale Understanding Your Horse: Equine Character and Psychology
A S Barnes and Company 1973 hardcover with dust jacket used 204 pages, 6 1/2 inches by 10 inches tall
cover: "Have your ever wondered what a horse would say if he could talk? Have you ever been curious about the 'body language' of a horse? What makes a particular horse memorable?

Understanding Your Horse: Equine Character and Psychology will help you to find answers to some of these questions by sharing with you the experiences of people who know and love horses. It is the author's contention that those who understand a horse ride better and enjoy riding more than those equestrians who know nothing about the psychology of horses.

Written by a lifelong horse enthusiast, the book offers heartwarming as well as humorous anecdotes about horses and their riders. In these tales you will find bits of horse philosophy and horse sense that will make you appreciate your own horse more and admire others with deeper understanding. You can even find helpful hints on the kind of horse to buy to suit your own personality!

Mrs. Haley has found through personal experience that sometimes the feelings for a particular types of horse can be passed down from mother to daughter. In a moving passage, she describes her emotional attachment to a horse from her childhood, only to find that her child had formed a similar attachment. Lighter moments are recounted, too. Did you ever see a horse drinking a bottle of soda pop?

The book is fully illustrated with photographs which have been gathered from several countries and which portray various types of horses. Moments of humor are captured as well as mnay showing a horse's spirit and a rider's delight. Also included are Margery Reeves Kinley's winsome drawings of horses at rest and in action.

However, you don't have to own a horse yourself to be fascinated by them, and you don't need to be an expert rider in order to be charmed by this book. All you do need is a sense of humor and an appreciation of the special bond between a horse and a loving owner."

Farriery: A Complete Illustrated Guide, Hickman, John
3 Hickman, John Farriery: A Complete Illustrated Guide
J A Allen 1980 0851312284 / 9780851312286 hardcover with dust jacket used 240 pages, 7 1/2 inches by 10 inches tall
from the dust jacket: "In Britain alone there are something in the order of half a million horses and ponies, all needing proper care and attention to their feet. Yet liteature on the craft and the practice of farriery is scanty and generally out of date. Although the old truism "no foot, no horse" is widely accepted in equestrian circles the lact of attention to feet is by no means isolated and continues to be a frequent cause of lameness.

Lieutenant-Colonel Hickman's book is therefore particularly welcome, as it is a complete and illustrated guide to farriery containing over 300 line drawings and photographs, many of which are step-by-step sequences demonstrating the various stages of shoeing and making a shoe.

This is a practical book and anyone who has responsibility for the general health and well-being of horses will find it an essential refrence work and those with only a rudimentary knowledge of farriery will learn much from it.

The book begins with a short history of horseshoeing, tracing its origins to pre-Christian times. The anatomy and physciology of the foot are clearly explained. This is essential if the practice of farriery, to preserve and protect the horse's foot, is to be a rational approach based on sound scientific principles. The tools used on the foot and at the anvil are described and the various types of horseshoes; the method of making front and hind shoes; turning a calkin; drawing a clip together with removing a shoe; preparing the foot; fitting, nailing on and finishing off the shoe are dealt with and illustated stage-by-stage.

The care of the feet in unshod and shod horses and in young stock; methods of preventing slipping; winter shoeing and the use of pads are not neglected.

Attention is given to the use of special shoes for defective feet; the prevention of injuries caused by abnormalitites of gait and to surgical shoes for the treatment of diseases and injuries by providing protection and relieving pressure.

Condition: Pages are clean. Dust jacket has creases, edge tears, and wear to the edges and corneres. Spine is cocked.
