It was in 1829 that Joe, a strapping nineteen-year-old from Virginia, joined the Rocky Mountain Fur Company under the aegis of the Sublettes and Jedediah Smith, and headed west on an odyssey unique in its combination of hair-raising high adventure and hilarious low comedy. For the next twelve years, until the Last Rendezvous in 1840, the Rockies rang with tales of Joe's wild exploits as trapper, jester, ladies' man, and student at "Rocky Mountain College" (unaccredited). When the beaver trade played out, he helped drive the first wagons to Oregon, served in the legislature of the provisional government, and went to Washington as a special envoy to President Polk. (Clad in buckskin and spouting Will Roger-ish witticisms, Joe made himself right at home in the White House and was lionized by Washington society.) In 1849 he returned to Oregon with a commission as U.S. Marshal, and lived out his days defending and improving the community which he had helped to build."Condition: Pages have edge soil and corner wear.
