1 Scully, Vincent American Architecture and Urbanism
Holt, Rinehart and Winston Publishing 1969 softcover used
from the cover: "Vincent Scully, one of America's most brilliant architectural historians, defines architecture as a "continuing dialogue between generations which creates an environment across time", thus describing his intent in this book: to present, in terms of their history, American architecture and city planning not merely as being two related subjects but as being inseperable in both immediate effect and ultimate significance. Throughout this study, Professor Scully demonstrates the interplay between architectural style and urban effect, analyzing the quality of the order imposed on the environment and the meaning of city scale via the hieratic relationships of street, superblock, and over-all plan pattern. Covering the full range of development from the settlements of the Pueblo Indians to the proposed urban megastructures for the great cities of America, the author shows the early attempts to integrate the classical heritage of Europe with the American agrarian democratic ideal, and describes the evolution of these strains into contemporary times, when they appeared as the Beaux-Arts ideal, on the one hand, and the Prairie School, on the other. He explores the effects on American architecture of such movements as the New Bauhaus and the International Style, and he also discusses the work of such architects as Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Paul Rudolph, Louis Kahn, and Robert Venturi. To illustrate a text sweeping from broadside to elegy, Professor Scully includes 525 photographs, drawings, and maps, in what is probably the most extensive documentary on American architecture and urbanism yet published."
