1 McBane, Susan Keeping a Horse Outdoors
David & Charles 1985 hardcover with dust jacket used
dust jacket: "All aspects of equestrianism are becoming increasingly popular, and more and more people are anxious to keep their own horse or pony. The costs involved are forever rising, and many owners, and potential owners, are constantly looking for ways to economise. Many feel that the answer is to turn their horse out all year round, and save on stabling and feed bills; but, although this method can save both time and money, it is not such a cheap and trouble-free way as a lot of people think. This practical, down-to-earth guide takes the owner through everything that should be considered; it highlights the problems and pitfalls involved, and gives sound advice on how to avoid them, and on how to make sure that your horse lives happily at grass all year round, whether in work or resting.

The author begins by covering the reasons behind wanting to keep a horse at grass, and the types of animals suited to the life; she talks about the kind of field and shelter required, and the necessary acreage; the need for company, and the important differences between truly natural conditions and domesticated outdoor life; health and condition, feeding and watering, grooming, rugs and shoes, working and resting. It is popularly supposed that a grass-kept horse cannot be worked so hard as one stabled, and cannot be kept fit enough to do more than light work; this book shows how 'outdoor' horses can be worked up to very good condition at any time of year. There is also a very useful chapter on pasture management; it is pointless turning a horse out to grass year in, year out, unless the owner is prepared to spend time maintaining the condition of the available acreage. Advice is given on the importance of treating and fertilising the pasture, and the need for a really effective rota system of use.

Whether you already own a grass-kept horse, or are just contemplating the prospect, this book will soon become an invaluable aid to both your peace of mind and your horse's well being."

Condition: Book is in good condition, the pages are crisp and clean. Binding is tight. Dust jacket has rubbing wear, creases, price clipped corner, and wear to the edges and corners.
