1 Gilbert, James Skywriting, an Aviation Anthology
St Martin's Press 1978 0312727879 / 9780312727871 Hardcover used
"In many ways, Skywriting is the most remarkable aviation anthology ever compiled. The richness and wealth of this collection is so compelling that this book does what no other single book on aviation could hope to do - afford the reader a grasp of the totality of man's experience in the sky, the lure of the clouds, the sensation of flight and the fear and triumph of the unknown. Here for the first time are the world's greatest flyers and masters of aviation in one volume. Contributors include: Ernest K Gann, 'Pappy' Boyington, W H Auden, Michael Collins, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Eddie Rickenbacker, Baron von Richthofen, de Havilland, Francis Chichester, Nevil Shute, and many many others.

Accounts range from the first aerial marriage performed aloft in a balloon of the last century, to excerpts from the journals of Wilber and Orville Wright, to the hair-raising exploits of early pilots of the barn-storming days. It's all here through two world wars, Korea and Vietnam, to that golden moment when the world watched two astronauts step onto the moon. For the uninitiated, Skywriting will open the door to the marvelous world of aviation literature. Long-time aviation enthusiasts will find it riveting armchair reading with an interesting blend of lesser-known writers and familiar heros. All will discover Skywriting to be more than a collection of anecdotes. They will find it a chronicle of man's struggle to overcome the two greatest obstacles of the last century; the sky and himself."
