John Dowd began kayaking as a schoolboy in New Zealand twenty years ago and has made a number of prodigious voyages in the intervening years. He has kayaked from Singapore to Java, and from Punta Arenas, in the Strait of Magellan, 1100 miles up the coast of Patagonian Chile. In 1977-78 he led a group of four men and women in two double Kleppers across the Caribbean from Venezuela to Florida, paddling in excess of 2000 miles."
