1 Grinder, John; and Bandler, Richard The Structure of Magic II
Science and Behavior Books, Inc. 1976 0831400498 / 9780831400491 hardcover with dust jacket used
from the dust jacket: "In this second volume in the series, the authors bring their special skills as model-builders to the area of non-verbal communication. They extend their explicit model of verbal communication created in Volume 1 of the Magic series, using the patterns of verbal form as a way of helping the reader to identify and use the patterns of non-verbal communication.

The book is in five parts. In Part I, the authors present tecniques for identifying and utilizing a client's most frequently used way of making sense of his ongoing experience. One of the greatest challenges faced by people in the helping professions is making contact with and communicating effectively with the people who come to them for help in changing. Some clients are auditory, some kinesthetic, and some are highly visual. The book helps therapists understand and shift their communication strategy to meet the client on the level of his particular and specific model of the world.

Part II presents an explicit model for non-verbal communication in the context of working with clients who are incongruent in their comminication. They review the work of Gregory Bateson and his colleagues as well as make a definitive study of the double-message problem in communication.

In Part III, the authors present a detailed discussion of the process underlying the phenomenon of semantic ill-formedness, which alludes to representation clients create which lead them into ineffective communication patterns and loss of choice in their expereince. The neurology underlying this phenomenon is introduced in Volume I. In this volume detailed case histories are used to identify and show how effectively the process behind the initially purely verbal category of semantic ill-formedness can be challenged.

The delicate and complete area of family therapy is presented in Part IV. In this section, Grinder and Bandler show how the same patterns which are so effective in individual therapy are present in effective family therapy, but are organized in a different way. Central to this part is the discussion of the Pairing Principle - a widely applicable principle which makes the process by which people find one another and form pairs understandable.

Part V contains a formalization of all the tchniques presented in Volumes I and II.

Volume II of The Structure of Magic is a rich, detailed, delightfully-written presentation of models for effective therapy.

It presents a model for human communication, and at the same time offers specific exercises and techniques which will sharpen the skills which poeple in the helping professions are constantly striving to do."
