from the dust jacket: "No symbol has had a greater influence on twentieth-century American culture than the frontier. It has been used to rewrite our history, to define our national character, and to shape our vision of the future. Nearly one hundred years after historians proclaimed its passing, the American frontier continues to live in the landscape of contemporary Alaska.

In this book, author Lee J. Cuba shows how the residents of Anchorage, Alaska's largest city, establish and sustain their claim as modern-day American pioneers. Based on extensive field interviews and supplemented by a variety of other data sources, the book's analysis turns on the irony that Alaska emerged as a national frontier only after it became sufficiently urbanized, thus reaching a certain level of economic and political development. This investigation reveals the sense of community that developed among the residents of Anchorage and examines how new-comers come to share this sense and to identify themselves as members.

Identity and Community on the Alaskan Frontier illustrates how the mobility and transiency of Alaska's population combine to promote a sense of community among Anchorage residents. In a world of frequent residential mobility, Cuba contends that an important part of who we are is still derived from where we live."
